We have been anticipating The Devin Townsend Project’s new album Deconstruction for quite some time, but have been positively slobbering over the prospect since we found out the identities of the guests who will appear on the album (see the line-up, matched with the track list, here). Among those guests are Joe Duplantier, the vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the almighty Gojira, and Paul Masvidal, the vocalist and guitarist for Cynic. Both of them join DT and his bandmates on a song called “Sumeria”.

The modern musical world being what it is, Deconstruction has already leaked, which is a shame. And from leakage of the album to download sites, of course it will be a short step before the songs start to appear on YouTube for streaming. One already has. Guess which one.

Initially, “Sumeria” appeared as a track recorded off a broadcast by a Finnish radio station, with subpar sound quality and sounds of the DJ talking at the end. But now, some asshole has put the actual album track up for streaming, with album-quality sound (well, at least mp3 quality). So, of course, we completely ignored that, in protest of the leakage of what is likely to be an album-of-the-year candidate from one of the most creative metal artists working. That protest lasted about 60 seconds.

Having registered our protest by waiting 60 seconds, we listened to the song, and it’s stunning — a massive, complex, heavy, beautiful, many-layered creation that will take many listens before the contributions of all the parts become clear. But there is no mistaking Joe Duplantier’s contribution — there are passages in the song when those lumbering, instantly recognizable Gojira riffs begin to stomp and Duplantier’s instantly recognizable voice begins to proclaim the verses. Not that Devin Townsend stands in anyone’s shadow, but if you’ve been pining for a new Gojira song, there’s one lurking inside “Sumeria”. Β And even though we really do think it’s a shame that this album has leaked, as responsible journalists reporting the news as it happens, we’re embedding that YouTube clip of “Sumeria” right after the jump.

P.S. It looks like the whole album is up on YouTube now. Assholes.

P.P.S. To forestall getting slammed in the comments by DT fans, the headline on this post was obviously just a shameless grab at attention by a diehard Gojira fan (me). This is very definitely a Devin Townsend song. But it does have a Gojira song lurking within. Β πŸ™‚

  1. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww… me wanted new Gojira. I’ve only ever listened to DT’s solo stuff once, it was good, Idk if I’d buy it, but it was enjoyable. I suppose I’ll have to check this out when I get a chance.

    • You REALLY need to hear this song. Really, truly. The rest of the album is stunning, too. Let me repeat that: stunning.

      • I like it. Especially the Gojira riff lol. I’m only like 2 minutes into the song, and it feels like it’s going on forever, but it’s epic! I might actually buy.

  2. I likes!

I suppose the only way to go after having an awesome album with Anneke (where she seemed more like the featured singer instead of a guest) is to get a bunch more people involved.

    • Fair point — she really did seem like the featured singer. He sure did get a bunch more people involved on this one. But his own vocals are also amazing — incredible variety.

      • Yeah, he doesn’t really need anyone else to sing on his albums, but such a collection shouldn’t be passed up if given the opportunity.

        • I think this is what makes the album so notable. He’s so damned talented in every department, and so popular at the same time, that he doesn’t need any guests. So when you layer this kind of eye-popping guest list on top of what what he does for himself, it’s really like a Cultural Event in the world of metal.

  3. Two hours ago from DT’s Twitter: “Ha! πŸ™‚ @dvntownsend Dude, you need to make some t-shirts to sell! “I illegally downloaded the Devin Townsend Project’s ‘Deconstruction!’ ;)”

So I don’t feel so guilty now, since DT himself is spreading the word.

  4. although it has been leaked on to the internet, i bet it will sell incredibly well, i mean its fuckin devin townsend, one can only expect greatness!!! the rest of the album is probably just as brilliant as this song, i mean with that line up of guests, his solo work is already godlike and then he decides to harvest metals most talented and make them sing and play in his record? i predict album of the year…

    • I was browsing the comments on DT’s Facebook page yesterday — dozens of comments about the leak, and almost everyone was saying that they were going to buy the CD anyway, including people who had already downloaded it, usually because they wanted to support him and the guest artists or because they wanted to have and hold the physical CD, or both.

We’ll have a proper review of Deconstruction in due course, but from what I’ve heard, it’s definitely one of the best releases of the year so far — and that’s coming from someone who isn’t a diehard DT addict and is wary of clean singing in metal to begin with. πŸ™‚

  5. I recognize the Gojira gallop chugging and the Gojira “I have/am/will” lyrics.

  6. I’m at work so I won’t get a chance to hear this until tonight, but besides the new Opeth coming out later this year I’ve seriously been anticipating this album for a long time now it seems. So excited. I’m usually a downloader but I’m sure as hell buying the cd.

    • Yeah, I’m definitely buying it, too, even though we’ll be getting a review download from Century Media. I’m a dinosaur — I still like having a CD of music I really like.

  7. I don’t want to make any judgements based on the leak personally, as the sound balance could well be off (amongst other things that could be different). I’ll wait for a proper, official promo copy. And then buy it on the day of release too.

BUT – christ, it is VERY Gojira for a lot of it isn’t it?

  8. Jesus Christ. I’m pretty sure I just jizzed. This sounds amazing! So excited for the release! This makes me rethink downloading the leak.

  9. Crap, I nearly had a stroke after reading the headline. Still, good song, needs more listening though.
