December and 2011 are both over, and with the end of the last month, it’s time to round up what we saw over the last 30 days about forthcoming albums.

We usually try to post these updates on the first of the month, but the first of this month was New year’s Day, and I was moving kinda slowly that day. Plus, I’ve been focusing on year-end lists from a variety of sources, and, well, I’m late with this. I have more excuses, if you’d like to hear them.  No?  Okay, I understand.  I’ll just shut up and get going with this list.

So, here’s the deal:  In these METAL IN THE FORGE posts, I collect news blurbs and press releases I’ve seen over the last month about forthcoming new albums from bands we know and like at NCS (including occasional updates about releases we’ve included in previous installments of this series), or from bands that look interesting, even though we don’t know their music yet. In this series, we cut and paste those announcements and compile them in alphabetical order.

Remember — THIS ISN’T A CUMULATIVE LIST. If we found out about a new forthcoming album before December, we wrote about it in previous installments of this series. So, be sure to check the Category link called “Forthcoming Albums” on the right side of this page to see forecasted releases we reported earlier.

This month’s list begins right after the jump. It includes some real eye-openers. In fact, it’s not too soon to say that 2012 is already looking like yet another royally skull-fucking year for metal. But as usual, this list is half-assed rather than comprehensive. I confess that in December I was even more half-assed than usual in keeping my eyes open for news about new albums. So, feel free to leave Comments and tell all of us what I missed when I put this list together. Let us know about albums on the way that  you’re stoked about, even if you don’t see them here!

  1. ABORTEDABORTEDABORTEDABORTEDABORTEDABORTED ABORTEDABORTEDABORTED!

  2. Kartikeya – Durga Puja Jan 10th.

  3. Excellent list, I’m really stoked for a lot of these! One you might want to add is Necrophagist’s “The Path To Naught”. It was actually listed as a an upcoming 2012 release in the latest issue of Decibel magazine.

    • Yes, I saw that — under the category of “Dateless Releases”. Which pretty much sums up the next Necrophagist album. It’s been a projected release for years, so I thought it best to wait until Relapse gives the world an actual release date before getting excited.

  4. Really, Morbid Angel? Really? Did you not notice the massive shitstorm of hate directed at Illud Divinum Insanus? What would make you think that it’s a good idea to release a remix? Questions of MA’s artistic freedom aside, it’s just a bad business decision.

  5. I could be wrong but I believe Daylight Dies also has a release planned for the first half of this year.. looking forward to that one.

  6. Katatonia and Hour Of Penance are likely for this year. They both hope to be out before summer. Also, Zonaria have had one in the hopper for a while, they finished the mix in November.

  7. It just occurred to me that both Marduk and Cannibal Corpse have projected 2012 release dates for their new albums as well.

  8. I’m a little surprised that Lamb of God wasn’t mentioned for January or Every Time I Die in March. Definitely excited about Goatwhore, The Contortionist, Asphyx and Converge though!

  9. That Pallbearer album is going to be absolutely amazing, as their demo has three of the best epic doom songs that I’ve heard in a long time. The new song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqLQlL-sSJ0 is also amazing.

  10. That new Abigail Williams is bound to see me through most of the year. The songs which have already debuted have on over so many of the doubters.

    • I had included them on an earlier list or I would have done it in this one. Probably should have included them anyway, because the album is so good it’s worth multiple mentions.

  11. Naglfar or Nagelfar?

  12. GOROD!!!

  13. Don’t forget, Thy Catafalque’s Rengeteg doesn’t get its NA release date until Tuesday. Granted, it’s been out since November and I got my copy of the CD last Tuesday, but as far as I’m concerned, until all major release dates have been met…

According to their Myspace profile, Ne Obliviscaris’ The Portal Of I is supposed to come at the end of the month. I haven’t seen a date anywhere else, plus their Big Cartel page is currently down.

  14. This list… and the comments… One shan’t be able to sleep today.

  15. Thanks for sharing, this is a fantastic blog post. Keep writing.
