I’ve failed. This makes the seventh day in nearly 6 years, weekend and holidays and inclement weather included, when I haven’t been able to post something of substance. I blame California Deathfest, and my inability to spend the hours before the next night preparing something for our putrid blog.
I have photos and lots of thoughts about the bands I saw on Saturday night, but that will have to wait until Monday. All I’ll say for now is that the photo above is a hint about the band whose Saturday set, for my tastes, was the best of the day. But it was a very, very close call, because it was a very strong night of metal, which included these people:
Below is the list of what I plan to experience tonight in Oakland, CA. It will be a severe test of the soles of my feet and the vertebrae in my back, and of course the pliability of my overtaxed liver. If you’re a praying person, to whatever deity, remember me in your thoughts. And thank you.
And if you can guess who will be playing with Nader Sadek, let me know.
3:30 – 4:00 – Lycus
4:15 – 4:45 – Ritual Necromancy
5:00 – 5:30 – Goat Torment
5:45 – 6:20 – Loss
6:35 – 7:15 – Worship
7:30 – 8:10 – Gnaw Their Tongues
8:30 – 9:15 – Pseudogod
9:35 – 10:20 – Bolzer
10:45 – 11:30 – Nader Sadek
11:55 – End – Immolation
We’re not worthy of Matron Thorn \m/
We truly are not. The man is a rare artist.
Thats a really solid lineup there (outside of Gnaw Their Tongues, who do nothing for me)…Ill be curious to know how Lycus does, Ive had two separate friends in two separate markets tell me their live show has been completely underwhelming so far
I saw them in Seattle about 10 days ago, so… well, I missed them this time due to alcohol.
Lycuss were killer in Seattle but paled in comparison to the crushing Worship. On the other hand, I think that Bell Witch sets (which are common in Seattle) have a habit of going way too long. An opening band does need to be on stage near 45 minutes.
Honestly, though, the Seattle highlights for me in the last few weeks, in relative order have been: Bolzer, Goat Torment, Lluvia, Predatory Light, Worship, Vanum, Ritual Necromancy, Lycus, Old Coven… not including some of the always stellar local acts (Sacrament ov Impurity, anybody? How come so few people know about these two?).
Correction: *An opening band does NOT need to be on stage near 45 minutes.
Lycus was wonderful. I loved them when I played with them in Chicago and it was even better watching them play when I wasn’t exhausted from playing the same day.
This still counts as a post!
You may be biased, but I’m taking it.
Damn right, this post is still worth more than most other sites!!
🙂
Another killer line-up, wow! 🙂
I would totally see like half of those bands just on their own.
I know. It really was a phenomenal start to something that I hope will keep going.
There’s a third day?! Sonovabitch! Aevangelist, Autopsy and Bölzer alone would make me pay for a 3-day festival, no questions asked.
I will have a bit more to say tomorrow, but I think Bolzer stole the whole festival tonight.
Did they say anything about a full length album?!?!?!
Please say they did.
Unfortunately, they made no announcements and played no new songs.
Forgive me…but I never got the obsession over Bolzer. They’re decent, but nothing to kick the dog over.
I really liked their music before the live performance, so I’m sure that had a big effect on how I thought about their live show. But now having seen them at both MDF and CDF, they really are a force of nature in the flesh with a big sound system behind them.
