I had enough time last night to turn myself into a musical glutton. Just kept stuffing myself to the point of swelling up like a dirigible, hoping I’d come across something that wasn’t tasty before I exploded. That didn’t happen, so I had to summon the last vestiges of willpower and make myself stop.

So here’s a whole bunch of music, and only pithy impressions from me.

WAYFARER

Wayfarer’s third album, their first for the Profound Lore label, is described as “a reflection of the Rocky Mountains and high plains of their native Colorado”, “drawing influence as much from the dusty, dark Americana of the ‘Denver Sound’ and the scores of epic westerns as they do the fury and melody of black metal….”

Below you’ll find streams of two tracks from World’s Blood, “Animal Crown” and “The Dreaming Plain”, both of them as blood-pumping, as head-hammering, and as addictive as they are dark and dramatic (and that long second track adds a desolate and haunting mood to the cavalcade of sensations).

ATAVISMA

“Sacrifice Unto Babalon” comes from The Chthonic Rituals, the debut album of the French band Atavisma. What an absolutely electrifying death metal firestorm this is! And when it’s not raging and roaring and soaring skyward with near-overpowering intensity, it emits grievous aromas of disease and decay.

The Chthonic Rituals will be released by Memento Mori on July 23rd.

NATTVERD

“Skuggen” is a new song by the Norwegian black metal band Nattverd. The wonderful cover painting was made by Khaos Diktator Design.

The combination of ominous drum beats and a shrill pulsing tone at the song’s outset pulled me right in, and the morphing experience that then followed kept me in a tight grip. It’s a bleak and often viciously intense track, and it rocks as well as rips… and why does something as simple as that shrill pulsing tone prove to be such a sharp hook?

(Thanks to Milos for linking me to this one.)

THRONEUM

Throneum are based in Poland, with roots that can be traced back to 1996 and an extensive discography. I got into them through their 2016 album, Morbid Death Tales, which I recommend if you haven’t heard it. The three tracks in the player below all come from the band’s latest album, The Tight Deathrope Act Over Rubicon, which will be released by Hells Headbangers on June 29th.

There are so many things to like about these beautifully crafted, terrifically dynamic songs, but I’ll just limit myself to praising the fuzzy “warmth” of the guitar tone in the riffs, the banshee shrieking timbre of the solos, the explosiveness of the drum performances, and the vocalist’s raw intensity.

FINIS

11 Temple Stones” is a track off Visions of Doom, a debut EP by the German trio Finis. The music is a wild and well-plotted trip — malefic, hallucinatory, skull-cracking, orgiastic, and intensely charismatic. The vocals alone are enough to send shivers down the spine. Enormously impressive!

Look for Visions of Doom from Iron Bonehead Productions on July 6th.

酸葬儀 ACIDFUNERAL

酸葬儀 acidfuneral are two anonymous individuals who list their location on Bandcamp as Urbana, Illinois. I don’t know the significance of their use of Japanese characters (at least I think those are Japanese characters) in their name. The title of their second album is 葬儀地平線 Funeral Horizon. The song below is “漂流通してスターレスレルム Drifting Through A Starless Realm“.

This track is an ugly, corrosive, granite-heavy beast, capable of slamming your head against the wall and filling the mind with frightening visions as well. It accomplishes a hell of a lot in just slightly more than two minutes. Greedy bastard that I am, I would like more minutes from this band soon!

WITCHSKULL

The next song is an exception to that porous “rule” in our site’s title. It’s a track named “Demon Cage” by the Australian band Witchskull that DECIBEL premiered yesterday. The thick riffs, the heavy, head-moving bass-and-drum tandem, and the trippy leads are all virally invasive… and those vocals definitely do merit an exception.

Demon’s Cage” will appear on Witchskull‘s new album Coven’s Will, set for release by Rise Above Records on June 1.

HAMMERS

It was right after this next morsel that I stopped gorging myself on new music last night, fervently hoping that no one would offer me a wafer-thin after-dinner mint.

And no, I didn’t enjoy this last song and video at all. Not one little bit. I’m waaay to mature for this, not to mention too grimm and too kvlt. I’m just putting it here as a sociological artifact. I found nothing funny at all about the guy deflating in the middle of his onanism when the devil substituted a skin mag for appliance ads. Or when the one dude vomits into the lap of the other dude after waking up. Or the cavorting of the cross-dressing cowboy. Or anything else that happens in this crazed video.

I assure you, I didn’t like the song either. The fact that I can’t get it out of my head doesn’t mean I like it. I mean, it couldn’t possibly be because it’s catchier than chlamydia… or includes lyrics that make me want to yell along with the vocalist… or that the vocals are so damned fierce?

Not that you would really want to soil your mind with additional music by this Australian band, but “Speak of the Devil” comes from Homeblokes, which is Hammers‘ debut EP, which will be released on June 22nd. The video was shot and directed by Colin Jeffs.
