AN NCS VIDEO PREMIERE: MAJESTIC DOWNFALL — “COLLAPSED PITCH BLACK”

 

The white-robed figures in the video move in unnerving spasms through mist lit by a midnight sun, observed and beckoned by a crowned king of death. The figures flail, spin, and wander aimlessly as the skull-faced lord placidly observes their derangement.

Meanwhile, the members of Majestic Downfall perform a crushing soundtrack steeped in hopelessness and misery, a doomed embroidery of skull-cleaving percussive blows, moaning melodies, and tormented growls.

 

 

The figures wave flags in fruitless fervor as the music’s intensity mounts and coils the tension like a winding spring of pain. The ghastly king himself begins to stagger and then to strike down the helpless white-shrouded forms as the music surges, swelling into a battering onslaught. The riffing whirs and whines, creating a sensation of chaotic calamity, and the vocals becomes even more unhinged in their agony.

The figures turn on their imperious master, clawing and savaging his prone form, casting sprays of blood like ocean foam boiling from collisions against jagged rocks. The storm in the music abates somewhat, leaving space for a guitar solo of spellbinding despair. The vengeful spirits tear the blood-drenched, skull-faced crown from the eviscerated lord, hoist it high, and wear it — and the music gloriously soars to heights of desolate splendor.

 

 

This video, which we’re premiering, is a fascinating (and unnerving) interpretation of Majestic Downfall’s “Collapsed Pitch Black”, one of the ravishing tracks on the band’s stunning 2018 album Waters of Fate. As we described in our review, it’s an album you can lose yourself in very easily. The music is staggeringly intense and atmospherically immersive. The melodies are powerfully memorable paeans of soul-splintering sorrow.

The transfixing video was directed by Leandro Córdova, and many other dedicated people were involved in creating it (a full list of credits can be found here). The album is available through three labels — Chaos Records, Solitude Productions, and Weird Truth.

And finally, we are happy to report that Majestic Downfall has written a new album, with plans to begin recording it in the coming months.
