Evergrey

We’re just a heavy-music site, but it’s hard to ignore what’s happening in Europe right now as the world takes another big step backward into a darker time. That has influenced my musical choices in this collection. The song titles and some of the album titles seemed particularly appropriate. As always, the music streams are mostly brand new, and very good, and varied enough to suit many tastes.

EVERGREY (Sweden)

The first song is a hard-charging, emotionally fiery, and ferocious track, with a glorious guitar solo in the mix — and of course it’s a well-earned exception to our rule about singing. Excellent video too. “Save Us” comes from Evergrey‘s new album A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), out May 20 via Napalm Records.

INTOLERANCE (Spain)

The next song is “Embodiment of Chaos” from a new album named Dark Paths of Humanity. Dismal and desperate moods shroud this punishing and increasingly savage and exhilarating death metal assault. The album will be released on May 13th by a triumvirate of Godz Ov War Productions, Memento Mori, and Fucking Kill.

DESTRUCTION (Germany)

No faith in humanity? Destruction certainly have none. Destruction singer/bassist Schmier says this about the new song and video: “This back-to-the-roots dystopic crusher drops an in-your-face message: only solidarity is the key for the survival of our kind!”

Prepare to get your pulse racing, and to enjoy a delicious dual-guitar solo. The song is off this venerable band’s new album Diabolical, coming from Napalm Records on April 8th.

QAALM (U.S.)

The next song, again accompanied by a video, is an excerpt from a 20-minute track named “Existence Asunder“, which will appear on this band’s upcoming full-length Resilience & Despair, due for release  by Hypaethral Records and Trepanation Recordings on April 15th.

Suffocating gloom and shattering agony flow through in equal measure (the vocals are especially soul-shattering), but joined by music of chilling yet sublime grief. The thought of where this goes in the other 12 minutes of the full track is both intriguing and frightening to contemplate.

I AM THE NIGHT (Finland)

Next we have yet another music video, this one for the song “Ode To The Nightsky” by a band whose members include Markus Vanhala (Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum), Janne Markkanen (ex-Omnium Gatherum), Okko Solanterä (Horizon Ignited), and Waltteri Väyrynen (Paradise Lost, Bodom After Midnight).

There’s misery in the music and a feeling that sinister and diabolical forces are creeping forward — and those forces also attack in a sweeping blaze of madness. There’s solemn singing in this song, but in tandem with throat-ripping ferocity.

The song is from an album named While The Gods Are Sleeping, which will be released by Svart Records on May 6th.
