In the autumn of this year Void Wanderer Productions and War Productions will jointly release the third album by the melodic black metal band Obšar from Slovakia. The album’s name is Propastnyk, and it continues exploring the band’s inspirations from Ruthenian nature, culture, mythology, and demonology.
To help introduce the new album, what we have for you today is a stirring and beautifully multi-faceted song from Propastnyk named “Vorožky“.
“Vorožky” really is a thoroughly exhilarating song, but also an elaborate song of many facets, phases, and changing moods. As the music moves and morphs, the changes are mediated by a continually gripping drum performance and by vocals that range from grim and gritty growls to escalations of howling torment.
Among those changing facets are the vibrant whir of riffing that crests and falls like surging seas; vivid keyboard notes that brightly glitter and dance; hard-punching and rapidly thrusting grooves; start-stop convulsions of fretwork aggression that seethe and scythe; and swirling lead-guitar harmonies that pick up the keyboard melody.
In the song’s penultimate phase, all those ingredients come together to create a spectacular crescendo, and the sonic seas surge again. But the song’s finale is unexpected — a crystalline a cappella female vocal harmony that’s both beautiful and haunting.
There are haunting moods in the intensity that precedes that soft denouement, as well as moods of mystery, jubilation, and anger. It’s all so gripping that most people won’t be satisfied with only one listen, and the more you listen, the deeper the song’s hooks will sink in.
VWP and War Productions will release the album on CD. Pre-orders will be available at the locations linked below.
