The three seasoned Greek musicians who joined together to form the black metal band Ignominous — just in time to confront the Covid assault — have introduced themselves and their debut album Dawn With No Light through these striking words:
“Ignominous is the pain in our veins, the scream in our hearts, and the shadowed path in our souls — a journey we embarked on many years ago, even before we met each other. The dawn with no light symbolizes our endless struggle, the bleeding of our symbols, and the long journey we have taken together. We have entered the eternal night, and in embracing the shadows, we find true life as the dawn with no light approaches.”
No doubt, the turmoil expressed in that statement has deep and distant origins, but it was exacerbated by more recent events. As noted above, these three joined together in 2020 but the pandemic slowed their work, and by March 2021 all their rehearsals ceased due to severe Covid-related health issues that afflicted bassist Anestis Nekhromancer.
However, the band rose again at the dawn of 2022 and completed the writing of the songs that are now encompassed by their full-length debut, which will be released in early October. As a vivid sign of what they’ve accomplished, we now premiere a song from the album named “The Coming Fall“, presented with a lyric video.
In addition to bassist Anestis, whose experience includes participation in such bands as Terrordrome, Twilight, Obscene, and Medivial, Ignominous includes guitarist and vocalist Chris (ex-Regent), and drummer Billy Vongaar (Terrordrome, Twilight, Disembowel, Yoth Iria, and Head Cleaner).
In line with the quotation we shared above, they converged on a mission “to create raw and uncompromising black metal” — ferocious and fast music “reflecting the dark and hopeless period that fueled its creation.” They sum up the song we’re premiering this way:
“A bursting opus of fast blast beats, dark, haunting melodies, and hopeless lyrics, based on a real-life experience. It’s a journey from the final hour to the last breath, and the final thoughts before your coming fall.”
Both the words of the song and the moods of the music represent a harrowing transformation. Lyrically, it narrates a downfall, at first following fiery dreams of flying to the stars under the guidance of ancient signs, “blessed with evil and cursed with joy”, but then un-done by deceit and pain, left in hopelessness to confront life’s end.
Like the words, the song begins in a thrilling blaze, with a high trilling riff setting a sharp hook immediately, anchored by heavy, turbulent bass lines and ferocious percussive assaults accented with bursting fills. The vocals are themselves in flames, and raw and cutting enough to leave scars, while sweeping celestial keys make the music sound even more glorious (and supernatural).
Yet as the tale unfolds and begins to change, so does the music. Although the rhythms still hurtle with visceral force, the melody descends toward darkness, still magnificent but becoming more anguished and desperate. And when the hell-for-leather rhythms suddenly vanish, the guitars seem to writhe in confusion — as a prelude to strong singing that adds a further striking dimension to the band’s music.
In the song’s final movement, the pain in the music explodes, the vocals becoming more shocking in their screaming intensity, the riffs boiling in agony, the synths sweeping overhead toward apocalypse.
And so, it’s one of those songs that’s exhilarating, even frightening, but also unearthly and haunting, and it sticks in the head right away:
The recording process for Dawn With No Light began at Stone Studios, with the final mix and mastering completed at Suncord Studios in October 2023. The album will be released through Vinyl Store on October 4th, and it comes recommended for fans of Rotting Christ, Necrophobic, and Dissection.
