More than seven years and seven months ago we hosted the premiere of a video for a song off In the Mouth of the Devil, the then-forthcoming second album by the punishing Swiss band Conjonctive. At that time the band were building upon both their debut album Until The Whole World Dies and their experiences in touring Switzerland and opening for the likes of Crowbar, Biohazard, and Aborted, among others. And now we’re hosting another Conjonctive video premiere in support of another album, a new one named Misère de Poussièr.
Seven years and seven months is obviously a long break. In Conjonctive‘s case, the interval was the result of a hiatus in 2019-2020 and significant lineup changes, including the addition of drummer Guido Wyss (formerly of Near Death Condition). But the band are ferociously making up for lost time, as you’ll find out when you listen to “Dying Melody“, because it’s nothing if not ferocious.
And the video you’re about to see? It’s a ferocious and brutal horror, so explicit in its blood-letting that it doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
Vocalist Randy provides this preview of the song and video:
“When the guys sent me the first demo of this song I directly felt an old school and brutal death metal vibe. The construction of the song is simple and short so I wanted to write easy and bloody lyrics: a torture session. Our video maker Corentin had the same feeling when he listened to this song for the first time and he came with a wicked script which is really close from the original story… but I won’t tell more, you have to watch it!”
The song itself definitely does have an old school and brutal death metal vibe. It attacks like a combination of jolting, high-speed jackhammers and hungry circle saws in a feeding frenzy. The drumming maniacally batters, but also continually shifts gears and patterns, just as the riffing does. The guitars, as their high, whirring sounds change, come to channel not only the unhinged viciousness of an assault but also the searing agony of the victim.
Through it all, the vocals are terrorizing, a changing but rhythmically attuned amalgam of rabid howls, ravenous roars, and horrifying wails. All of it sounds certifiably insane.
There comes a point near the song’s center section when the music drastically changes, quelling the punishment and drifting into an eerie nether-realm, but even then the sounds become increasingly freakish — as a prelude to a final bout of start-stop jackhammering and vocal barbarity.
As for the video, visual gore and death metal have gone bloody hand in bloody hand for a long time, and maybe the most distinctive aspect of this one is that it’s a (very wicked) woman wielding the torture implements instead of being the victim, and pleasantly humming over her ghastly work at the end.
Rather than do any more to flesh out the hints you’ve already been given, we’ll just let you discover the details for yourselves (with apologies to people who may have weak stomachs):
Misère de Poussière is set for release on November 22nd. It was recorded by Vladimir Cochet at Conatus Studios. It was mixed and mastered by Miguel Tereso at Demigod Recordings. And the eye-catching cover art is the work of Shindy Design.
The album is available for pre-order now on limited-edition 12″ vinyl and digitally.
Below, we’re also including the previously released video for another song from the new album, “Ombre et Ordure“. This one depicts a ghastly wedding reception. The bride becomes possessed, nasty things happen to the rest of the wedding party, and the band looks and sounds possessed too, especially their murderous dueling vocalists. It sounds like a combination of machine-precise demolition work and macabre madness running rampant.
