The black metal band Nigrum was born in 2015 in Cuernavaca, the lush capital of the Mexican state of Morelos, but eventually found its way to a new home in the south of Sweden. The years that followed ultimately culminated in Nigrum‘s 2022 debut album Elevenfold Tail, and now they’re following that with a second full-length, appropriately titled Blood Worship Extremism, which will be released next month by Iron Bonehead Productions.

Nigrum‘s music, as it now stands represented through the new album, is as viscerally electrifying as anything you’re likely to find this year. The songs often provide tremendous surging power, barbarically unhinged vocals, and fleet-fingered, fire-bright fretwork that’s devilishly elaborate and ecstatic. But they also spin listeners through changes that strengthen the music’s iron-clawed grip.

You’ll see what we’re trying to get at when you hear the relentlessly dazzling song we’re premiering today — “Ineffable Empire“.

The immediate impression of “Ineffable Empire” is one of high-voltage full-blown delirium. In the tremendously heavy low end the drums fire like overheating mortars and the bass tunnels through bedrock at a furious rate of speed. In blistering and incandescent tones, the guitars manically writhe, spiral, and wail, and the vocals are as wild as everything else, a scalding torrent of come-for-the-throat howls.

Nigrum segment their madness with feral, punchy grooves, slaughtering double-bass eruptions, booming drum-fills, and elaborately layered high-speed fretwork that channels both cruel demonic menace and whirling exultation.

But the biggest change comes just past the mid-point, when the tumultuous rhythms vanish and the fire-borne guitars merely sizzle and eerily squirm — providing a prelude to yet another change, when the drums pound and rock and Nigrum break out a glorious heavy metal riff that rhythmically blares like an orgasmic siren. The lead guitar also feverishly flickers, a glory all its own, fueling the way toward a heart-racing finale.

We’re also including a stream of the previously released album track “Splendor of the Old World“. It’s every bit as exhilarating and dynamic as the song we’ve just premiered, a truly hellish romp that will get your adrenaline surging and your head spinning.

It might also be an even more fiendish experience — it has its own off-speed segment, which proves to be frighteningly hallucinatory, and even there the vocals are utterly mad. The bass also commands attention throughout the song, showing itself to be nimble as well as thrusting, and the lead guitar’s closing trill is completely captivating.

Iron Bonehead will release Blood Worship Extremism on November 22nd, on CD and vinyl LP formats. For more info, check the links below.
