In this feature we’re helping spread the word that the Romanian death metal band Putred have their second album Megalit al Putrefacției set for release by Memento Mori on January 20th, just in time to scare the New Year to death in its crib.

By way of introduction for the song premiere we’re now hosting, here’s part of how Memento Mori‘s press release evokes the sensations of the music:

“Sonic references across Megalit al Putrefacției are many – Mortician at half-speed, Cianide at their world-eating best, early Necrophagia‘s weird textures, Apparition / Sorrow with a shot of energy, and of course the unholy trifecta of Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, and Grave.”

The same write-up refers to the riffing as “slamming” and “slithering,” and the atmosphere as “slimy,” “rancid,” and “foul-smelling,” and both brutalizing and eldritch. But of course we have some thoughts of our own, spawned by this new song, “Era Morbiditații.”

The track’s mid-paced propulsion spawns visions of a big rumbling bulldozer, but the riffing miserably whines and weirdly squirms, spawning visions of a different kind — pernicious and morbidly preternatural — while the cavern-dwelling vocals, which sometimes seem like a horrific call-and-response, are indeed monstrously foul.

Monstrosity arises in other ways as well, as the music fiendishly lurches and surges, and the vocals explode in ghastly screams. The combination of brutish battering-ram blows, golem-like bass maneuvers, eerily quivering guitar-leads, and a freakishly spiraling solo add to the horrors.

Nothing about the song sounds healthy. It’s like the advance of an untreatable gangrenous disease of arcane origin, or maybe like the quivering progression of an intestinal tapeworm, coupled with cold-blooded bludgeoning and gutturals most disgusting. What’s not to like?

Putred‘s lyrics are all written and growled in their native tongue, and we’re informed that they tell “short horror-drenched stories about death, horror, the occult, and the afterlife.”

Megalit al Putrefacției, which includes a closing cover of Autopsy‘s “Critical Madness,” will be released on CD and digital formats, accompanied by the cover art of Jan Pysander Whitney. For more info, check the links below. Also, lend an ear to the new album’s first single, “Necromanție.”
