After a long six years or so, we at last have a chance for a reunion with the aptly named Green black metal band Insanity Cult. That’s roughly the extent of time that has elapsed since their last album, All Shall Return to Chaos, and their subsequent split (Contemplation in Discordance) with Void Omnia.
The occasion for the reunion is a new Insanity Cult album named Κάθοδος, which will be released on February 28th by the Chilean label Tragedy Productions, in collaboration with Order of Antinomianism, the circle of which Insanity Cult is a member along with such bands as Isolert, Sørgelig and Sores.
What we have for you today is the premiere of a song from the album named “Whispering Depths.”
The announcement of the new album was accompanied by these interesting verses:
Reverse heights, inverted skies
broken wings and the void.
Every road, an escape
and a saunter…
I had told you I was out for the end of the night
and every time I only reached the end of the sky.
Travelogue above the stars,
above the clouds.
A never-ending journey.
Someday I would become pain
and moment
and breath…
And we have this quotation to share about the song we’re now premiering: “Through inverted skies and broken wings, we wander beyond the void—an endless descent where we become anguish, shadow, and the breath of eternal night.”
When you listen to “Whispering Depths” you will have an immediate sense of the endless mysteries, the searching, and the agonies reflected in all those evocative words.
The ravaged riffing slowly washes over the listener like a dense and terrible tide, dissonant in tone, dismal in mood, and wholly enveloping in scope. The vivid clatter and chop of the drums creates a contrast, and the vocals pierce through with shattering and scarring intensity.
The guitars also seem to writhe in pain, depleted from their yearning, left miserable from their striving. The sounds also ring like distorted chimes and vividly swirl, elevating into a kind of stricken splendor above deep bass undulations – but the vocals are so tortured as to be terrifying, holding nothing back and spraying blood.
As the music sears and soars in all its extravagant layers, we do seem to be carried by the song in an exploration above the stars, struck by the wonder of frightening visions, which brilliantly shine even as they’re shattering the soul and pulling it down — though the voices remain the most frightening visions of all.
