(written by Islander)
The Colombian band Tumulario have already formidably hacked their own path through the dense, dark, and ever-expanding jungle of underground metal with a first tape release (2016’s Renace El Crudo Metal) and a pair of albums (Maligno & Esencial in 2021, and Vociferaciones in 2023). Now they continue forging onward with a third album named Vestigios that’s set for release on May 5th by Satanath Records (Georgia), Vestigio Records (Colombia), and The End Of Time Records (Ireland).
If you’re not familiar with the previous works of Tumulario, this pitch by the labels should prove to be very enticing (it certainly was for us):
Forged in the fires of the Colombian underground, this full-length bears six unholy tracks that echo the obscure tones of ancient traditions. Each note entails a sacrilege while every riff is a chant that reverberate through the darkened halls of time, a dense path through the most organic metal essence — savage yet sublime, drenched in the thick blood of old-school reverences like Root, Beherit, Ancient Rites plus the blasphemous heritage of everlasting South American influences such as Sarcófago, Dirges and Mystifier.
The song from the new album we’re premiering today — “Bastarda humanidad” — is also damned enticing.
If you don’t already know, you’ll learn from this song that Tumulario‘s music isn’t hemmed in by narrow genre boundaries but instead pulls freely but coherently from many hallowed styles — including occult doom, black metal, thrash, speed metal, and (for want of a better term) classic heavy metal. What you’ll also learn is that Tumulario‘s music isn’t too slick or shined-up but is defiantly raw and wild.
In this particular song Tumulario lead the listener inward with the enticing ring of a slowly slithering guitar harmony that sounds like the unfolding of some sorcerous spell, backed by the solid thump of drums and the menacing murmurs of the bass. But as the riffing progresses and rapid-fire demonic snarls emerge, you can begin to feel fiendish fires growing from embers.
Still occult in their resonance, the guitars brazenly blare and exuberantly whirl, like a devil-dance. The drums race and the fretwork vividly swirls, fronted by screaming and roaring voices, and haunted cries.
But the cadences rapidly change — the music stalks and stomps as well as gallops and hammers, and when the pacing slows, the music sounds menacing and morbid (but still unearthly). At all times, the vocals sound like wild beasts who’ve escaped the gates of Hell.
In a nutshell, the song sounds like… black magic. Its sinister and occult melodic tendrils have a way of slithering their way into a listener’s head and creating a seductive spell even as the vocals are coming for our throats and the rhythm section are punching our pulse.
We also invite you to listen to the first single from the album, “¡Hail gran Metal!” (which is free to download at Bandcamp). Its melodies are also eerily twisted and evil, piercing and provocative, but this time Tumulario add brief choral singing and gang howls to the otherwise raw and rabid vocal mix.
As expected, the song also evolves and switches moods in exhilarating ways. It races and cavorts like feral spirits set free, reaches heights of infernal grandeur, and spins and swirls like witches and warlocks in the throes of delirious possession.
