This trio of talents from Austria and Québec who joined together to form Détresse introduced themselves just last year through a startling debut album named Pessimismes, released by Vendetta Records. We described its music as “emotionally raw, explosively cathartic, and unrelenting in its intensity”, but also as “saturated in agony and hopelessness”, “ruined as well as raging”, and wholly “engulfing” in its varying emotional torrents.
Pessimismes was an eye-popping, heart-stirring, and soul-sinking debut, so much so that it landed Détresse at Julfest in Austria earlier this year, followed by a two-week European tour alongside Miserere Luminis in April, and will put them on stages in another tour alongside Darvaza, Merrimack, and Helleruin in December 2026, which will include appearances at Eindhoven Metal Meeting (Netherlands) and De Mortem et Diabolum (Germany).
The December touring activity is prompted in part by Vendetta Records’ forthcoming October release of a second Détresse album — Misères. The press materials for the new record offer this description:
DÉTRESSE’s second album MISÈRES deals with the misery of mankind and human hardship. It explores how oppression, deprivation, and despair shape everyday existence, blurring the boundaries between past and present. Shaped in raw, unadulterated soundscapes it provides a journey to the darkest parts of humanity.
Last month we had the pleasure of premiering a song from the new album named “Verrottet“, and today we premiere another one — “Les Nuits Jaunes” — which features vocals and lyrics by a notable guest.
Détresse have given us this statement as an introduction to the song you’re about to hear:
“For ‘Les Nuits Jaunes’ we chose to collaborate with Vestal of Merrimack, whose frantic voice and distinctive vocal style complement the song’s relentless intensity, this being our harshest track to date. Vestal also wrote the lyrics, taking the listener deep into the darkest corners of misery, where no light can pierce through.”
If you’ve spent any time listening to the music of Détresse before now, it’s scary to contemplate that “Les Nuits Jaunes” is their harshest track to date. And sure enough, it’s a harsh song, but it rivets the mind for reasons that extend beyond the ravishing nature of its assaults.
The shrill guitar harmony that opens the song vibrates with immediately striking intensity, and the rumble of big booming beats adds an element of ominous tension to an already-nerve-firing overture. The tension doesn’t relent — to the contrary, Vestal’s scorch-the-earth screams, coupled with furious blast-beats, dial it up into a red zone of anarchic violence.
The riffing flows in waves but sears like fire; it also descends in a way that sounds cold and cruel; and it feverishly writhes like fear and desperation captured by sound. Those big booming beats return along with bursts of crashing and slashing chords, a brief divergence (repeated later) before the scalding vocals and the boiling riffage return to spread both mayhem and agony on a sweeping scale.
In addition to Vestal’s vocals the song also features impassioned spoken words by C.S., as well as brightly flickering guitar-leads that accent and enhance the intensely engulfing nature of the music. And make no mistake, the song really will engulf listeners as it bends the emotional quality of the melodies in differing dire directions.
Now let’s go back to that song “Verrottet” which we premiered in August, in case you missed it. We had this comment from Détresse about the song:
“‘Verrottet‘ is the first single from the upcoming album Misères by Détresse. German for ‘rotten,’ the title reflects the song’s uncompromising vision of humanity at its core: corrupted, lost, and consumed by its own decay. With no hope of redemption, its only fate is an inevitable, self-inflicted demise.”
And we’d like to share again what we wrote about the song at the time of the premiere:
“Verrottet” rages from the first moment, erupting in a storm of blasting and tumbling drums, urgently throbbing bass notes, riffage that viciously scathes and maniacally roils, and rabidly howling vocals. Yet despite the music’s violent intensity, the rhythm guitar sounds dismal while the flashing lead-guitar creates impressions of delirious desperation. The experience is electrifying but very unsettling.
As the song evolves, the drumming shifts into bounding and skipping beats, the rapidly vibrating riffs contort in ways that sound even more desolate, and the vocals scream in flensing pain. Anguish and despondency go bleeding hand-in-hand, seemingly with no way out, until Détresse open their throttle again, with drums hurtling, guitars cutting and burning, and the vocals ranging from strangled choking sounds to explosive shrieks. The song’s closing fury also reprises the more grim and grievous melodies from its earlier phase.
