Last April we had the pleasure of premiering a striking video for a powerful song by Idolatry from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The song was “Clefs Au Chambre de Tristêsse (A Key To the Room of Sadness)“, and it appeared on a split named Infection Born of Ending with the Ohio black metal band Unrest. Since then, Idolatry have completed work on their debut album, which bears the name Visions From the Throne of Eyes, and today we again bring you another Idolatry premiere, this time for a scorching assault from the new album named “Tiamatic Winds“.
According to the band: “The track is about wildfires ripping through western Canada during the writing of the lyrics. Imagining Tiamat, the Satanic entity, encouraging and blowing the flames hungrily across the mountains.”
As you listen to the song it’s easy to fix that vision in your mind’s eye. The music burns like a conflagration, with scathing riffs that whip like flames driven by a gale, the cymbal crashes going off like sparks, and the mix of searing shrieks and tyrannical roars appearing to drive the wildfire like the exhortations of blazing demons. It’s a hugely adrenalizing experience, an explosion of barely contained chaos in which the high-octane drum and bass performances are almost as frenzied as the ferocious vocal and guitar eruptions.
“Tiamatic Winds” is emblematic of one aspect of Idolatry’s approach to black metal. It’s an example of the band going full-throttle, expressing seething sonic viciousness through an inferno of blindingly fast instrumentals and unhinged vocal malice. But it is not the only aspect of Idolatry’s Luciferian devotion.
Idolatry are equally adept at casting dark spells in mid-paced movements via sinuous, vibrating melodies and bubbling bass notes, with a drummer who moves seamlessly from funereal rhythms to rocking beats (and d-beats) just as easily as he launches strafing runs of double-bass thunder and blasting snares. At times, Idolatry turn on a dime, one moment scorching everything in sight with a flood of napalm, the next moment dropping the pace for an instrumental performance that hints at progressive metal (albeit thoroughly blackened), and then unfurling a sweeping banner of infernal melodic majesty, complete with solemn chants.
What unifies the album’s dynamic approach, both when it burns like an inferno and when it takes more atmospheric turns, is the overarching sense of malice and impending doom that pervades the music. It’s uncompromising in its merciless devotion to scarring the landscape with hellfire — and it makes for a hell of a listen all the way through.
Visions From the Throne of Eyes will be released at the end of March and will be available from Humanity’s Plague Productions. The track list is as follows:

Sounds like every other lo fi 2nd or 3rd wave black metal band…no need to add more to this completely diluted genre space.

I like the style, too. But I think Narwhal also has a point. 🙂
Depends on which point…is the music particularly unique, of course not. I do take issue with the idea that their shouldnt be anymore bands playing this style though.
Yeah, once you cater to that sort of thinking you may as well just go and delete 90% of the music that exists in the world. No genre is safe from this issue.
