(Our friend and contributor Vonlughlio from the Dominican Republic wrote the following review of the just-released new album by the Indonesian band Perverted Dexterity, whose sole creator is also behind the black metal project Pure Wrath, whose music we’ve previously written about on multiple occasions at our site.)

Perverted Dexterity is the one-man project of Mr. Januaryo Hardy formed back in 2010. I found about this project in 2015, a year after the release of their debut album Primitive Scene of Inhumanity”, which featured fast-paced, in-your-face songs with  a raw production and cannibalistic vocals.

Yes, I was a tad bit late discovering the project, but was so glad I did. Hailing from one of the best BDM scenes around the globe — Indonesia (a land I want to visit someday) — this project has gained more notice since the release of that first album internationally. Prior to that, I believe it was much talked-about in the Indonesia scene as a result of their demo, a spilt, and a 2013 promo release. Of all the one-man projects around the globe, Perverted Dexterity is one of the best, and my favorite.

So after such a wonderful debut, the project released a split with Infinite Defilement in 2015 and a demo in 2016 while also working toward a sophomore album. But that’s not all, because Mr. Hardy also released in early 2017 the debut album of his black metal project Pure Wrath, entitled Ascetic Eventide. That was a very impressive, emotionally powerful record.

At the same time, I was sad when I saw the Pure Wrath album because I assumed no Perverted Dexterity would be released this year. Well, I was sooo wrong. To my surprise I saw that Sevared Records had signed the project and that a new album would be released this year. When I read this, I was at work and man tears were shed. My boss asked me what was wrong and I replied: “New Perverted this year”.

This new album is most definetly a step up as compared to the previous album, pushing forward with fast-paced songs and a more dense production, giving Spiritual Awakening an overall dark atmosphere accompanying the brutal delivery. The riffs are punishing, diverse, and fresh, giving the songs their own identity in the story being told.

The title of the songs, along with the cover, give you an idea of the theme of a post-apocalyptic awakening (at least that’s how I interpret them). In fact, if you see the cover of the first album and the new one while listening, you can sense that Spiritual Awakening is a sequel of the first, but one that surpasses the original.

One of the best aspects of the whole production are the damn vocals. They have changed a bit for this release, providing a much darker tone (if that makes sense), as if the shaman of the Spiritual Awakening is doing them. Also, in one of the songs Mr. Paolo Chiti (Devangelic, ex-Putridity) joins in on top of everything else.

If you like Brutal Death Metal, or are just looking for excellent new metal, check out Perverted Dexterity. Also take a good look into the Indonesia scene if you haven’t already — there are so much great bands there that play either Death or Brutal Death Metal.
