Metalhead lovers of ghastliness in all its forms, but especially classic horror flicks from decades gone by, will have reason to rejoice when a new EP by Heads For The Dead hits the streets on November 5th.
Through two previous albums this group of metal veterans have already proven their devotion to supernatural subjects, but this time they’ve taken that a step further — providing their own reinterpretation of theme songs from movies such as Maniac, Halloween and The Thing. And as icing on this gory cake they’ve also recorded cover songs of tracks by Misfits and the Ramones.
What we’ve got for you today is the band’s homage to “Maniac“, presented through a video that’s replete with over-the-top lyrical pathology and an abundance of blood-drenched film clips.
The song bounces and bruises right from the start, accented by an immediate bit of soloing ecstasy that spurts above the grisly chainsawing riffs and head-bobbing beats. The vocals are as ghastly and gargantuan as you could want for a manifestation of the song’s serial killer protagonist (and the victims’ screams can be heard as well).
The music channels a deranged wildness as it scampers and slashes, but the blood flow begins to congeal as the song’s pacing slows to a stomp and creepy, quivering horror-movie keyboards put chills on the back of your neck. The riffing crawls and claws, deepening the mood of gruesome hopelessness, but begins maniacally eviscerating again in massive tones — with those eerie keyboards continuing to squirm and slither down your spine.
In other words, this is the kind of thoroughly monstrous music that will put a fiendish smile on your face.
For those who might just be discovering Heads For The Dead for the first time, it combines the ghoulish talents of guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Jonny Pettersson (Wombbath, Gods Forsaken), vocalist Ralf Hauber (Revel In Flesh), and drummer Ed Warby (Gorefest, Hail of Bullets).
The new EP will be released by Transcending Obscurity Records, who recommends it for fans of Wombbath, Revel In Flesh, Crawl, Live Burial, Grave, Dismember, Hypocrisy, Paganizer, and Skitsystem. The absolutely perfect cover art was rendered by The Art of Badic.
Pre-order info is available through the following links, and we’re also including a stream of the previously released EP song — “Halloween“.
