The people behind Obscureviolence, two of whom are also members of the death metal band Horror God, lit upon a very good name for their new entity, given the obscure and violent nature of the music they’ve made for their debut album Refuting the Flesh, which will be released by Transcending Obscurity Records on February 7th.
Two songs from the album have previously surfaced, and today we’re presenting a third one, which is the record’s macabre title track.
Transcending Obscurity accurately portrays the music of Obscureviolence as a channel for “the darkest and vilest sounds of black and death metal”, and the label also makes this further observation:
As intimidating and loathsome their music is, which becomes a force of nature when they go on a rampage, they do know the importance of pacing and make sure to let the darker parts come to the fore and add a mysterious, ominous aura to the proceedings and also let the subtle dissonance seep deeper into the subconscious.
In the case of the album’s title song, these three Russians have created a swiftly changing kaleidoscope of unhinged yet still groovesome savagery that by turns is berserk and brazen, demented and dismal, feral and exultant, thuggish and freakish.
And they manage to do all that in a compact three minutes.
They launch the song with a fast stop-start momentum, with acid-toned riffage that swarms and blazes, backed by thunderous drumming and fronted by monstrous roars. They also shift into fretwork that queasily squirms and miserably chimes, pierced by ghastly shrieks, and when the drums kick into an off-kilter gallop, the guitars sear and then swirl.
Deranged convulsions of full-bore violence also ensue, along with hulking stomps and gruesome lurching which pave the way for an electrifying guitar solo that’s fire-bright in tone and even more bizarre and demented that everything that’s come before (hard as that may be to imagine).
OBSCUREVIOLENCE is:
