I just saw this. Looks like it went up yesterday. It’s the new official Amon Amarth video for “Destroyer of the Universe”, one of the tracks from the absolutely wonderful Surtur Rising. It’s a live video that was shot on the band’s May 6th stop in Philadelphia, PA at the Theatre Of Living Arts.
The first YouTube comment I saw beneath this video cracked me up. But, figuratively speaking, it pretty much captures my reaction to the video: “its 4am. ive been watching porn for the past 2 hours. i decided to come to youtube and i saw a new video from amon amarth. and guess what. i came in 2minutos.”
That YouTube comment made me think of the other day when I got to a premature ejaculation support group meeting and no-one was there, I just figured that I came early 🙂
LMFAO!
This! This should be the new banner! Umm…not how it’ll fit, but just shove it in there, somehow.
(“That’s what she said.”)
No one else seems to have noticed that I’ve changed the original banner since using your initial contribution. I think maybe it was The Artist Formerly Known As Dan who suggested I pick the sub-banners from among the previous week’s comments, which is what I’ve started doing. byrd36’s comment is definitely in the lead this week. It’s long . . . but I can work with it. I’m used to that.
I noticed! It made me do a double tack and gave me a good, rousing giggle.
Also: “It’s long . . . but I can work with it. I’m used to that.” That’s what she didn’t say. ZING!
I been zinged! It’s long, but I can make it short?
That’s what the rabbi said???
+1
This is just fuckin’ amazing! Intensity doubles with a vid like this.
My sentiments exactly. This band is so full of awesome on stage, and this video really captures all the . . . awesomeness.
It it just me or did the first verse feel a bit heavier or a bit crunchier than most Amon Amarth? In a good way, of course.
Don’t know about that, but it’s definitely one of their thrashier verses. And that tremolo-infused chorus is just almighty. Fucking satisfying guitar solo, too. This whole album kills.
Maybe it was just thrashier then…either way, it added some nice variety.
I haven’t gotten the new one yet…but NCS has kind of resparked my interest in them…not that it really went away…just kinda died down a bit.
Watching me this makes me wonder if Brendan Small created Dethklok in the image of Amon Amarth. Becuase if you watch AA perform live and Dethklok’s “live” performances on Metalocalypse, they are damn near identical.
I know I am late to the party on this and I imagine this has been discussed ad naseum on message boards and blog sites all over the world, but it just hit me.
I agree there’s a big resemblance. But here’s what Dethklok creator Brendon Small said in an interview:
Q: “Who were the characters of the band based on?
Nobody is based on one particular person. Tommy and I discussed a lot of archetypes. Like the really good guitar player, and the other guitar player who’s not as good and is a second-class citizen. So in Dethklok we have the fastest guitarist alive and the second fastest, and that creates a little bit of friction. In metal the bass is completely mixed out almost all the time. So we have a self-hating bass player who’s always trying to act like he’s more important than he is. The singer is kind of a quarterback, and the drummer helps write a lot of songs. I thought the drummer should be able to do a bunch of stuff, like Roger Taylor in Queen. Even though it’s not based on his personality, it’s what he can do in the band and what parts of the songs he does contribute to.
Q: Nathan has a sort of Danzig vibe.
Yeah, people thought Danzig. Honestly, we thought Conan the Barbarian would be an awesome front man. But the way that he moves we actually did base on a person: George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher from the band Cannibal Corpse. If you see Cannibal Corpse live, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.
For Skwisgaar, we created a blond Swede — a handsome guy who thinks he’s the greatest thing in the world, with a little bit of Yngwie Malmsteen in his attitude. Toki is Norwegian to Skwisgaar’s Swedish, pompous attitude. And, again, a second-class citizen in the same band.

There’s a great story where Mikael Akerfeldt got an email a few years back from Toki Wartooth issuing a cease and desist for stealing his look and mannerisms.
Good times.
That’s pretty damn funny. If there was a reply I would love to see it.
Here’s one interview of Akerfeldt where it comes up (scroll down near the end):

Thanks for digging that interview up. Pretty cool to read the inspiration to the characters.
