OVERFLOWING STREAMS (PART 2): MEPHORASH, NAPALM DEATH, NIGHTFELL, RUBY THE HATCHET, SATAN

MEPHORASH

In my infinite wisdom, I totally forgot that the Swedish black metal band Mephorash’s new album 1557 – Rites of Nullification had already been released (despite Andy Synn’s glowing review) until I saw that Mephorash posted a stream to a track other than the advance track they had previously presented on their FB page. This “new” track, entitled “Phezur – Dissolving the Sea of Yetzirah” has me strongly regretting that lapse in memory.

The song masterfully conjures a deeply evil, occult, Luciferian atmosphere with its stirring riffs and caustic snarls, and the riff that comes in about a quarter of the way through the song is certainly quite the earworm. It moves through periods of chaos, groove, eerie calm, and infernal majesty, all while maintaining a truly nefarious aura. Make this the soundtrack to your next black mass if you know what’s good for you.

NAPALM DEATH

Napalm Death will probably always be cool. This might be presumptuous, but I’m going to assume that most of you know and love Napalm Death. They have a new video done by the inimitable Costin Chioreanu for the track “How The Years Condemn”, off of their newest effort, Apex Predator – Easy Meat. It’s an absolute banger of a track, and the video highlights the track’s message that our apocalypse is coming slowly by our destructive habits, rather than in one fell catastrophic swoop like we always like to prophesize (though it seems that it can also represent the slow slide into alcoholism or addiction).

NIGHTFELL

You’ve heard plenty from us about Nightfell, so this is gonna be another short one, letting you know that their new album Darkness Evermore is now streaming in full on 20 Buck Spin’s Bandcamp page (it was on Noisey a bit earlier, but we never got around to mentioning that). The CD is due out today, with vinyl available October 23. If you loved the early-Amon-Amarth-gone-death-doom sound of The Living Ever Mourn, you’re gonna love this too (though I’ll say this one is a bit doomier than the last, to my ears).

RUBY THE HATCHETT

These next two offerings don’t exactly fit into The Rule, but the songs are bitchin’, so therefore I present them to you. This next tidbit is a new music video for “Vast Acid” from Philly group Ruby the Hatchet, who released Valley of the Snake earlier this year. The video is meant to recall Evil Dead, though as someone who hasn’t ever seen that movie I can’t corroborate whether they do indeed succeed in such a conjuring.

I can tell you that the track rocks, and that Jillian Taylor has a helluva voice (to me, somewhat reminiscent of that of Royal Thunder’s Mlny Parsonz). There’s a reason these guys landed a tour opening for Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Ecstatic Vision (the former’s just released new album is KILLER, by the way). I’ll include a Bandcamp stream of Valley of the Snake as well, if the video convinces you that you need more (which it should).

SATAN

The resurrected NWOBHMers of Satan have returned with another album, Atom by Atom, and a few days back posted another track from it via Decibel, “Fallen Saviour”. These guys can sure as hell write a reliably killer riff, and they continue that trend here. If you manage to keep your head still even past the opening riff of this song, you might want to check your vitals. This album will be a reliable one to blast out of your car window, if this track is emblematic of the rest of it (which I have no doubt that it will be).

Atom by Atom comes out October 2 on Listenable Records.
