SHORT BUT SWEET: HOODED MENACE AND ALGOMA — A SPLIT

On New Year’s Day of this year I posted a large round-up of new music that included brief teasers of music from a vinyl split release by Finland’s Hooded Menace and the Canadian band AlgomA. At that point, release of the split by Doomentia Records had been delayed past its originally scheduled November 2016 release date, but it finally became available at the end of January (and the limited-edition splattered-color version of the vinyl is already sold out), and full streams of both songs are now up on Bandcamp.

The artwork for the split was painted by the Italian maestro Paolo Girardi. My own admiration for his work probably appears slavish to regular readers here, but man, what he did for this split really makes me drool. Happy New Year to one and all. I hope you survived whatever you did last night, intact and with only a modicum of blood loss and brain-cell death. I would tell you in detail what I did but I’m not sure you could stand the excitement. Even I was so drained after both putting down the robot uprising and preventing the savagery of the loris horde’s celebration from overflowing their compound, armed with nothing but a few blow darts, that I was asleep by 10:30, stone cold sober and vomit-free.

I’m beginning the new year at NCS the way I ended the old one (here), by assembling a giant batch of the new music I heard in recent days that I thought would be worth your time, plus one older release I came across only recently.

As a trained medical professional (ha!), I’ll warn you that if you did suffer more than a modicum of blood loss or neuronal cell death, you might want to wait another day before exploring what awaits you below. It won’t help your recovery, and it’s no sane person’s idea of a hangover cure. Damned good metal, though.

I’ll also mention that because this post takes the place of my usual Sunday Shades of Black feature, the music is mainly in a blackened vein, though not entirely. Continue reading »

AN NCS PREMIERE: ALGOMA (“PHTHISIS”) AND CHRONOBOT (“RED NAILS”)

Chronobot-Algoma split

 

AlgomA are a “despair-fueled sludge” band from Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario, Canada. Chronobot are purveyors of “noisy, spaced-out stoner doom” from Regina and Prince Albert in Saskatchewan. They have joined together on a new split release that will become available on vinyl and as a digital download on April 1 — and today we bring you the premiere of one track from the split by each band.

As you’re going to discover, although there are definite differences in the approach of these two bands, this split makes a lot of sense, too — because both bands are soul-crushingly heavy.

ALGOMA

AlgomA’s debut release was the full-length album Reclaimed by the Forest in 2014. Their two tracks on the split are “Phthisis” and “Electric Fence”, and what you’re about to hear is the first of those. Continue reading »
