We’re entering the time of year when year-end lists will quickly start popping up, and that means our own annual LISTMANIA frenzy will soon begin. As usual, the earliest of the forthcoming lists (those that will soon appear in print zines), will necessarily neglect albums that are set for release between now and January 1, and even some that were released in the first half of November. We will continue trying to spotlight those, despite succumbing to listmania.

The impending LISTMANIA orgy also means that our own output of reviews and new-music features will likely diminish. In what’s left of our period of normalcy, I have plans to throw as much new quality music your way as I can, including two features today, beginning here. The organizing principle of this collection is simply this: Diversity.

Some days you wake up and you want some soothing, pretty music. I’m talking about soothing, pretty METAL music, because obviously I’m not a completely tasteless moron who left his nuts at the checkout counter of Abercrombie & Fitch. But some days you wake up in the mood for filth. You just want to bathe yourself in a slurry of warm fecal matter, pus, and fresh afterbirth. You know what I’m talking about, so don’t deny it.

Well, that’s how I felt this morning. And while I was waiting for the bathtub to fill and lighting the scented corpse-flower candles, I went looking for some appropriate musical accompaniment. Here’s what I found.

This morning Profound Lore posted that cover art up there, the one with a photo that looks very much like what’s filling up in my bathtub, except with bones. I don’t like bones in my bath because sometimes they get stuck in my hidey-hole as I’m lowering myself into the broth. Continue reading »

UNDERGANG: “INDHENTET AF DØDEN”

(We’re pleased to deliver this guest post by our Danish friend and fellow metal blogger MaxR of Metal Bandcamp, who shares some gruesome background on the 2010 debut album by Denmark’s Undergang.)

Undergang’s debut full-length Indhentet Af Døden from 2010 is now available as a name your price download on their Bandcamp (so is its successor Til Døden Os Skiller). This is a putrid slab of old-school death metal. You know the death metal cliches: Rotten, filthy, disgusting, nasty; Undergang makes them all come true.

Described as “Obituary twisted by Demilich”, Indhentet Af Døden bludgeons you with brutal riffs performed with with an almost hardcore-like single-mindedness (that would be the Obituary part). But don’t confuse this with simple-mindedness; Undergang keep you on your toes by adding the odd weird riff and time-signature change (and that would be the Demilich twist).

Undergang are a Danish band. And unlike most others bands from non-English-speaking countries, Undergang perform entirely in their native tongue – not that you can really understand a word of the guttural growls of David Torturdød. Their name actually means “downfall”. Indhentet Af Døden is “overtaken by death” (and Til Døden Os Skiller “till death do us part”). And Torturdød is literally “torturedeath”. DOOMED THINGS: FUNEBRARUM, UNDERGANG, AND ALDEBARAN

Here’s how this post evolved:

Finland’s subterranean death-doom miscreants Hooded Menace have signed with Relapse Records and have finished recording a new album called Effigies of Evil, which will be released sometime this summer. I’ve been monitoring Hooded Menace’s Facebook page, waiting for enough new info to justify a post. Something, anything . . . the album art . . . a  song . . .something!

I haven’t yet found anything like that, but I did find that the band’s second album Never Cross the Dead (2010) is being released in a limited vinyl pressing by Doomentia Records. So I visited the Doomentia web site, which I haven’t done in way too long. While there, I discovered that Doomentia has recently established a Bandcamp page (here). So I went there.

One of the first things I saw was a stream of a split that Doomentia released on vinyl in April 2012 by Funebrarum and Undergang. I will have difficulty describing the music, because it has impaired my higher brain functions, leaving me in a drooling cretinous state. It makes me feel both obliterated and happy. Though the split consists of only two songs, it is hands-down one of the sickest, heaviest releases of the year. Continue reading »
